The most important voice of a raga is called a vadi vowel, that is, the tone which is placed higher than the other vowels in the raga and which is used more will be called the vowel of that raga. For example, raga puriya, marva, sohni are similar in tone, but with the difference of mereistic voice, the three ragas are completely different from each other.
